Pit bull killed after attack

8-year-old boy’s face chewed up; child believes attack was intentional

FONTANA – A young boy mauled by a pit bull told police he believes the attack was intentional.
Fontana police Sgt. Jeff Decker said the 8-year-old boy and his brother told investigators they were outside a home in the 17000 block of Via De Anza about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when they heard the teen who owned the dog say something like “get away from here” before he opened the door and let the dog out.

“The dog weighed about 60 to 65 pounds,” Decker said. “It got the kid by the face and just ripped up his face.”

The 8-year-old suffered severe wounds to his face. He was taken by paramedics to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton and was released Thursday, Decker said.

The boy received a large number of stitches but is reported to be doing well under the circumstances.

The dog was shot and killed by police.

The dog’s unidentified owner was not cited, but Decker said he could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

“The police are investigating it now as an assault case,” he said. “We’re probably going to take a case on him.”

No one answered the door at the boy’s Loma Vista Court home Thursday.

The victim lives a block from where he was attacked, in a tightly packed neighborhood of short streets, cul-de-sacs and two-story houses with very small yards.

Decker said the boy’s parents were out of town when he was attacked. He said the boy was being taken care of by relatives.

After the attack, Decker said, the dog ran to his owner’s home.

Animal control officers told police the dog’s owner tossed it into the backyard of an empty house in an attempt to hide it.

“Before it was shot, animal control tried to corner it, but no luck,” Decker said.

He said officers fired a bean bag round, then Tasered the dog, to no effect.

“When the dog charged officers, they shot two rounds in it, and that took him out of the game,” he said.
